New coat mock-up adjusted

Posted by Alexandra at Studio Alexandra

Previous post: first try-on before adjustments.

Today I pinned out the extra length in the back, tapering to the front/side front seam. When I put it on, it still wasn't quite right and it dawned on me that maybe I need to shorten all three pattern pieces by the same amount. So I tried that. I pinned out 1" all the way around, just above the original bust point to bring it where it should be.

Here's how it looks with a belt, front view first:

I really like the side view:

And the back view - has something reminiscent of the 1940's about it, doesn't it?

Sometimes when I look at these pictures, I think the shoulders look a tad too wide. So I compared the muslin coat with my favorite winter coat (the only winter coat I have, which is why I'm making a new one) and it's actually about 1/2" smaller. Definitely not too wide then.

My husband doesn't like the shape of the collar. He showed me, cupping his hands around it, that it should be pointed. It's an interesting idea and reshaping it wouldn't be a big deal. What do you all think: pointed or rounded?

I am pretty happy with it so far and can already see several incarnations of it in my mind. This length as a regular coat, shortened for a car coat or topper, different colors and fabrics, some trim... Yes, I know it's summer but we had a cool rainy day that made me contemplate a wardrobe full of coats and knee-high boots.

I have nothing to say about the coat but Alexandra your hair is getting long and it looks so cute!!!

Wow I'm impressed with the difference your alterations have made. I can't wait to see the finished coat!

I think your husband is right about the collar, something about the rounded collar just doesn't look right.

Coming out of lurking to say you have the fit perfect! I agree with your DH and Ali. The rounded collar looks a bit "little girlish" to me.

I agree with the '40s feeling, which is a good look for you. I'm undecided on the collar. I think I'd like either. Sorry, no help.

Good fit! I'd go with the rounded colllar omly if I were to use vintage-feeling plaid, otherwise, I'd make a pointed collar, a stand-up one, or a collar that wraps around like a shawl.

I really like the coat and the 40 feeling. I also love your longer hair. But the shoulder seem a tad wide to me too.

Forgot to add: with the present shoulder, your shoulders seem wider than your hips. But it might be just my subjective perception, I don't know.

If you want a vintage feeling definitely leave the shoulder width and collar alone. If you were aiming for something more contemporary, then perhaps the pointed collar and smaller shoulders? Either way, this is looking very good....

Shortening the bodice definitely got the fit where you want it. I'm taking the easy route and doing a coat that is not very fitted. I really like yours, and I think the collar looks fine. You could make a muslin pointed collar and just pin it over the existing collar to see how you like the look.

This one looks perfect on you! I'm working on my coat's muslin too, hopefully I'll be able to finish it by tonight :)

It is looking really good. I"m with your husband, I think a pointed collar would look good. But the rounded collar is ok....it looks so nice on you.....keep up the good work.

Beautiful fit! You are so lucky to have such nice square shoulders. You pull off the 40's style effortlessly.

I do like the rounded collar, esp. the way it does not meet in the center. It looks current to me. But- a pointed collar would look super, too.

I guess I better get moving and sew my muslin, too.

Wow! The muslin looks great. As for the collar, I can see the Peter Pan collar on a swing coat, but not a coat tied with belt, so my vote is with the pointed collar.

The pattern is perfect for you. Perhaps the neck is a little big, but it can also be the effect of muslin. Expect to see you in the material, its assessment may be different. greetings, Paco

I think the round collar is mimicking the round of your chin and that's why it isn't working. A pointed collar would contrast your chin and look much better.

Wow, it looks great. I agree with your husband, the round collar does not look right to me. I cannot wait to see the actual finished project.
