Project #13 - brown twinset

Posted by Alexandra at Studio Alexandra

For several years now I've been entertaining the idea of making my own twinsets instead of buying them. I even had the perfect pattern - Kwik Sew 2759. Last weekend I finally decided to try it out.

I finished it last night and wore it to the post office today. It's nice and comfortable, made of the same double knit I'd used for the brown dress.

Not a bad fit for pretty much straight out of the envelope. I used size S and the only pattern alteration I made was for square shoulders. It was very easy to sew following the instructions. I used the serger for the main seams and a simple zig-zag for the cardigan front/neckline binding and all hems. I have to say, the zig-zag finish is much prettier than I'd thought it would be.

Both pieces will need several alterations in order to become a TNT: erect back and shortening the distance from shoulder to bust. I also have some wrinkles indicating a need for a bust cup alteration but there is plenty of fabric to go around me so may have to start with size XS and then the FBA will take care of the circumference difference. Starting with a smaller size should also fix the shoulder length that looks just a tad too long in these pictures.

All in all, this is a great pattern with excellent instructions and I plan to perfect the fit so that it can join my lineup of TNT patterns.

The set looks wonderful. I found Kwik Sew to run a bit large. I'm trying to remember what size I used in a sweater I made a couple of years ago. I did take it in enough that I'm sure it ended up a size smaller. But, overall the fit was good "out of the box".

Beautiful - and it is interesting that I also sewed a very wearable verison of this pattern straight out of the envelope. ALl I did was a quick flat measurements to check bust waist & hips.

And you & I have just about opposite body types. Great pattern! I love your brown doubleknit version.

Very nice! I have some Kwik-Sew tops all cut and ready to sew; hopefully I'll get to at least one of them this weekend.

What a lovely sweater set on you. I think Kwik Sew does run a bit large, although I have entirely different fitting issues.

You remind me that I have had similar intentions for some time now; perhaps it is time to get started.

it may not be a bad idea for me to start making my own cardigan, it seems like I am constantly buying new black and white ones, your brown set is very nice indeed

See when you move to the island you will be all set! You will have a great set of TNT's to take so you will have more space to pack fabric! *LOL*

It's beautiful and I can't wait to see future incarnations!

Very smart. I would like to make twin sets too, but have never managed it. I only have a couple of Kwik Sew Patterns, but they do seem to have a lot of ease. You have some great knit fabrics, where do you buy them?

This looks great. I have a twinset pattern from FSG and haven't tried it yet. I keep wondering what to make it out of. Where did you get your knit?

Wow, that looks so great! Awesome job! I'm terrified of sewing a sweater-type top. Not sure why that is. I recently acquired some black ribbed sweater knit. I'm off to play with it...

Very pretty twin set, I agree Kwik Sew patterns do run large but they usually always produce such wonderful results. I have enjoyed reading your blog and looking at all your wonderful garments.
