Project #8 - blue knit dress

The gray sheath is patiently waiting for an invisible zipper and silk charmeuse to arrive in the mail sometime this week (I hope). I prefer to finish each project before beginning another one but I just couldn't wait. I wanted to sew.

And I made this:

This dress is from the same pattern as the brown dress. The only change I made was reducing the flare of the skirt. I pinned the brown dress so that the skirt would hang straight at the sides instead of A-line and transferred the modification to the pattern pieces. It turned out to be 3" both front and back. I blended the new side seam with the original at the hip.

This blue fabric is also the Double Knit Stretch from Nancy's Notions, in color Heather Blue. I don't know why they called it that because when it arrived, it was definitely navy. It still is. (In my pictures it looks slightly heathered but it really isn't - must be the fuzzy surface.) This is some seriously wonderful fabric. I can't even find the right words to do it justice but let me just say I wish I could live in it 24/7.

The right and wrong sides are just barely different. After the dress was cut and marked, I decided I like the other side better. Good thing I use chalk that brushes out.

The neck band on this one lies better at the side of my neck. I learned from sewing the brown dress that I need to keep it flat in the back and stretch it across the shoulder seams. I think it could be better still so I'm going to shorten the band by 1/4" next time. Yes, there will be a next time. Once I spend time fitting a pattern, I want to use it over and over, similarly to what Carolyn does. She is such an inspiration, by the way, so if you haven't visited her blog, please do now. She makes beautiful, classy clothes with a twist.

My husband did the photo job again. I really appreciate it because it helps me share my passion for sewing with him. (I don't know if he appreciates it; sometimes he grumbles.)

So now I have this great new dress and nowhere to wear it. At least not now because it's snowed all day. Snowed!!! But not much of it stayed because the temperature hovered right around 33-34F. It's supposed to go down into the lower 20's overnight so maybe we'll get some more. It would be nice to look at but I've never driven in snow. I really ought to learn soon.
Here's hoping spring comes soon!

Hi Alexandra, I left a comment on SG site but thought I'd leave one here too. The dress looks great and fits you really well. How nice that the fabric is comfy too! I linked a site to Sarah Veblen's site (on SG)for information on applying a neck band. Her method is well worth trying and it works every time :) I'll keep a watch for a smaller belt:)

I love the color of this version! How many more of those Nancy's Notions knits did you buy?! And did you ever think of embellishing the neckline? That would make it different from the others!

Thanks for the kind words. They are so appreciated!

Nugget says, "Hey, that's Miss Alex! Momma, doesn't she look pretty in that dress?"
"Yes, she does. Did you know she sewed that dress, Sweetie?"
"Momma, can you sew me a dress, too?"

Yes, we both agree that dress is gorgeous and looks great on you! I like that the color of the fabric has depth and it's not just a solid color. I really need to learn to sew and move beyond straight lines (name tapes and stripes). I'll learn to sew on a small-scale first (for Nugget) and will have to find a good, robust machine (I've broken two).

That weather was crazy, wasn't it? For some reason it didn't snow as much in our part of town and I had to convince Nugget that there wasn't enough snow to go sledding. Just in case it snows again and I see you behind the wheel of that huge sedan -- I'll give you a wide berth ;)
